#0183;#32;In Senegal, the environmental impact of artisanal smallscale gold mining (ASGM) using mercury (Hg) is poorly documented despite its intensification over the past two decades.
In Niger, artisanal gold mining contributes to the socioeconomic development for populations and government. It involves more than persons who pay artisanal gold mining taxes and more than peoples depend on it. Gold panning produces between two and ten tons of gold per year, which represents % of Niger mining sector exports.
Among the most significant environmental aspects related to artisanal and smallscale mining are deforestation, changes in landscape structure, influence over geomorphological processes and hydrological river regime, chemical pollution of soil and watercourses, influencing soil production capacity.
#0183;#32;Artisanal and smallscale gold mining (ASGM) has proliferated in recent decades due to the rising price of gold. Some sixteen million people are now estimated to be involved, primarily in rural areas of low and middle income countries. Most of these mines rely on mercury amalgamation to concentrate and liberate gold.
