We spent 1 1/2 hours( only seeing 4 horses)wandering around those roads before we came back out and found 67. It was almost dusk so we were about to turn around when we came upon 28 horses. So beautiful! We watched them for a bit. I also recommend not getting too close to them as they are wild.

Sand Wash Basin, an expansive area stretching 250 square miles, is isolated in northwestern Colorado, an hour and a half from Craig; 30 minutes west on Highway 40 to Maybell, then an hour north. It''s accessible only by high profile 4wheel drive vehicles, far from civilization, offering some of the best chances to view wild horses in their native habitat.

These wild horses are carefully monitored and protected within the confines of Sand Wash Basin by the Bureau of Land Management and wild horse warriors for Sand Wash Basin. Our docents, Cindy and Aleta, went above and beyond the call of duty, providing a professional yet down to earth narrative about the Basin and its residents.
Do not try to approach an injured Wild Horse. Although some of our Wild Horses appear docile, they are still Wild Animals and unpredictable. The BLM office works very closely with the Advocates in Sand Wash Basin, and we trust them to not act hastily when dealing with an injured Wild Horse.

Sand Wash Basin is a Multi Use area that includes use by dirtbikes, ATV, hunters, the wild horses and, yes, even sheep. The sheep in the Basin are there because the ranchers have grazing rights or allotments, in the Basin. The Sheepherders have developed many of the ponds that we see when we visit the Basin.
